The international adaptive sporting competition will take place Feb. 8th-16th, 2025

Vancouver, British Columbia, November 30, 2023 – Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025, presented by ATCO today announced a partnership with Whistler Blackcomb as the two organizations pledge to work together to deliver the first-ever winter adaptive sports program at the Invictus Games. The collaboration will also see Whistler Blackcomb work with the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 organizing committee to encourage more people to participate in adaptive winter sports and raise awareness of winter adaptive sports programs for service members and Veterans.

The upcoming Invictus Games 2025 will take place February 8th-16th, 2025, and will see up to 550 wounded, injured and sick service members and Veterans from up to 25 nations travel to Vancouver and Whistler to participate in a range of winter and indoor adaptive sports. The iconic Whistler Blackcomb mountain resort will host alpine skiing and snowboarding events. As part of the partnership, Whistler Blackcomb will be offering complimentary lift tickets for all competitors, family, friends and event workers.

Last week, the Whistler Blackcomb resort and the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 organizing committee hosted a delegation from the Invictus Games Foundation, including The Duke of Sussex, Founder and Patron of the Invictus Games. With 14 months to go until the start of the Games, the delegation visited some of the venues that will host the sporting action and ceremonies, reviewed operational plans and shared best practice from previous Games in readiness for delivering the first-ever winter adaptive sports program.

Participants will also get to compete at some of the 2010 Winter Olympic venues with Nordic skiing and biathlon competitions to be hosted at the Whistler Olympic Park in Callaghan Valley and skeleton at the Whistler Sliding Centre. These sports will be complemented by a range of core indoor sports hosted in Vancouver such as wheelchair curling, rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.

The partnership between Whistler Blackcomb and Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will also aim to build a winter adaptive sporting legacy for future Invictus Games. By offering the first-ever winter adaptive sports program, this event will enable competitors from around the world to not only learn a range of adaptive winter sports but also to take that knowledge home with them.

Some participating nations lack established winter adaptive sports programs, and the 2025 Games will serve as a catalyst for encouraging greater participation in winter adaptive sports in their home countries. The organizing committee will develop a winter sports handbook and a set of resources that will be passed on to future games, ensuring the sustained growth of adaptive sports.

The two organizations will also work together to promote greater awareness of the opportunities to participate in both winter and indoor adaptive sports all year round. It will also encourage more conversation and spotlight for the psychological and physical benefits of adaptive sports, no matter what time of year.

Whistler Blackcomb's Contribution to Adaptive Sports

Whistler Blackcomb has worked closely with the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program for several years, and they are contracted to run their Adaptive Ski and Ride Program. Their commitment to inclusivity is evident as they offer lessons for local, provincial, national, and international guests, running approximately 1300+ lessons per Winter season.

Lessons cater to participants of all ages, ranging from kids aged 3+ through to adults, and include those with cognitive and physical challenges, sometimes both. Whistler Adaptive Ski and Ride Program primarily runs stand-up ski lessons but also offers VI lessons, snowboarding lessons, some 3 & 4 track lessons, as well as an increasing number of sit-ski lessons for absolute beginners to advanced skiers.

Contribution de Whistler Blackcomb aux sports adaptés

Whistler Blackcomb travaille depuis plusieurs années en étroite collaboration avec le Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, qui est chargé de gérer son Adaptive Ski and Ride Program (programme de ski et de randonnée adaptés). Pour honorer le service des fondateurs de Vail Mountain issus de la 10e division de montagne ainsi que des hommes et des femmes des forces armées américaines, des Forces armées canadiennes et des forces de défense australiennes, Vail Resorts propose le laissez-passer Epic Military Pass. Ce laissez-passer offre un accès illimité et sans restriction à 41 stations de ski, dont Whistler Blackcomb, pour 205 $US, et ce, aux militaires actives, actifs et à la retraite ainsi qu’aux personnes à leur charge. Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 announces partnership with Whistler Blackcomb to deliver first-ever winter sports program

A delegation of senior representatives from the Invictus Games Foundation are in Vancouver and Whistler this week, invited by the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 organizing committee for a pre-planned visit. The delegation included Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex and Founder and Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation.

With less than 14 months to go until the start of the Games, the delegation is visiting venues, reviewing operational plans and focusing on delivering the first-ever winter adaptive sports program at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.

As part of the preparations for the Games, every Invictus Games has a chance to host members of the Invictus Games Foundation to walk through plans and the experience of the competitors and the friends and family.

The Invictus Games Foundation team had the opportunity to visit some of the world class venues that will host the sporting action and ceremonies. In Vancouver, the delegation visited the Vancouver Convention Centre and the Hillcrest Centre.

The delegation also visited Rogers Arena which will serve as the host venue for the Celebration Ceremony to conclude the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025. As part of the visit, The Duke of Sussex took part in the ceremonial puck drop for last nights game between the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks.

With the introduction of the first ever winter sports program at the Invictus Games, the team also visited key venues in Whistler including the Whistler Sliding Centre, Whistler Blackcomb and Whistler Olympic Park.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will take place from 8th to 16th February and will see up to 550 wounded, injured and sick service personnel and Veterans from up to 25 nations travel to British Columbia to compete in both winter and indoor adaptive sporting events.

Invictus Games Foundation Delegation Visits Vancouver and Whistler

This week (November 5-11) is Veterans’ Week – an opportunity for us to honour the brave Canadians who served their country with courage and dedication.

While it’s a time to learn more and reflect throughout the week, Canadian Veterans’ Week is marked by two significant days –Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8th and Remembrance Day on November 11th.

What is Indigenous Veterans Day and why is it significant?

On November 8, Canadians pay tribute to the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples who have served Canada in times of war and peace for more than 200 years, from the War of 1812 to both World Wars to Afghanistan, and who continue to serve.

National Aboriginal Veterans Day, as it was then called, was first observed in Winnipeg on November 8, 1994. It has since spread nationwide and is now known as Indigenous Veterans Day. There are some 23,000 Indigenous Veterans, and more than 2,700 Indigenous members currently serve in Canada's military forces.

Thousands of Indigenous people proudly served in uniform during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Many Indigenous communities also contributed to our country’s war efforts in other ways.

Cette semaine (du 5 au 11 novembre) est la Semaine des ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s, une occasion pour nous de rendre hommage aux braves Canadien·ne·s qui ont servi leur pays avec courage et dévouement.

Bien que toute la Semaine des ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s est un temps idéal pour en apprendre davantage et réfléchir, elle est marquée par deux jours importants – la Journée nationale des ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s autochtones (8 novembre) et le jour du Souvenir (11 novembre).

Qu’est-ce que la Journée nationale des vétérans autochtones et pourquoi est-elle importante?

Le 8 novembre, la population canadienne rend hommage aux membres des Premières Nations, des Métis et des Inuits qui ont servi le Canada en temps de guerre et de paix depuis plus de 200 ans, dès la Guerre de 1812 à la guerre en Afghanistan, sans oublier les deux Guerres mondiales, et qui continuent de servir.

Cette journée, qui a tout d’abord été observée à Winnipeg le 8 novembre 1994, est maintenant célébrée à l’échelle nationale.On compte quelque 23 000 ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s autochtones et plus de 2 700 Autochtones servent actuellement au sein des forces militaires canadiennes.

Des milliers d’Autochtones ont fièrement porté l’uniforme pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la guerre de Corée. De nombreuses communautés autochtones ont également contribué aux efforts de guerre de notre pays d’autres façons.

However, despite their service at home and sacrifice on the frontlines, Indigenous Veterans were subject to repeated injustices and discrimination. The government of Canada expropriated hundreds of thousands of acres of reserve lands during this era. Some of their land was also taken and given to non-Indigenous people as part of a program that granted farmland to returning Veterans – a reestablishment program that was typically denied to Indigenous Veterans. Often, they were denied access to the full benefits and supports given to other Veterans, making their transition back to civilian life even harder. Other Veterans had to give up their First Nation status to receive benefits.

Decades of advocacy, activism and protest led to a formal apology from the federal government in 2002, plus compensation for First Nations Veterans. In 2019, Métis Veterans also received an apology and a promise of compensation in acknowledgment that they also were not allowed to receive the same benefits and reintegration support as other Canadians after the war.

On Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour the service, the struggle, the courage and the sacrifice of all who serve at home, around the world and across generations. 

Toutefois, malgré leur service au pays et leurs sacrifices sur les lignes de front, les ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s autochtones ont fait l’objet de nombreuses injustices et de discrimination. Le gouvernement du Canada a exproprié des centaines de milliers d’acres de terres des réserves pendant cette période. Il s’est également approprié certaines terres Autochtones pour les donner à des personnes non autochtones dans le cadre d’un programme visant à accorder des terres agricoles pour les ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s de retour au pays – un programme de rétablissement auquel les ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s autochtones n’avaient généralement pas accès. Souvent, on leur refusait l’accès à toutes les prestations et aides accordées aux autres ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s, ce qui compromettait leur transition vers la vie civile. Certain·e·s ont même dû renoncer à leur statut des Premières Nations pour bénéficier des prestations.

Des décennies de militantisme, d’activisme et de protestation ont mené à des excuses officielles du gouvernement fédéral en 2002 ainsi qu’à une compensation pour les ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s des Premières Nations. En 2019, les ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s métis·se·s ont également reçu des excuses et une promesse de compensation en reconnaissance du fait qu’ils, elles et ielles n’avaient pas droit aux mêmes prestations et au même soutien à la réintégration que les autres Canadien·ne·s après la guerre.

À l’occasion de la Journée nationale des ancien·ne·s combattant·e·s autochtones, nous rendons hommage au service, au combat, au courage et aux sacrifices de toutes les personnes qui servent notre pays, chez nous et ailleurs, et ce, depuis des générations.

Every year on November 11, Canadians come together and pause in a silent moment of remembrance to honour the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.

We honour the 2.3 million Canadians who have served their country and the 118,000 who gave their lives in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. 

On Remembrance Day we remember their service and the ultimate sacrifice they have made to protect our freedoms.

London Drugs will work with the Invictus Games 2025 organizing committee and founding partner, True Patriot Love Foundation, to promote initiatives supporting the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Canadian service members and Veterans through the power of sport. The collaboration will also see London Drugs work with Invictus Games 2025 to raise awareness for the important contribution that Canadian service members and Veterans make for their country.

London Drugs has a strong tradition of supporting Canadian service members and Veterans at home and abroad, providing funds for a number of military and veterans support organizations. Since 2010, London Drugs has sold over 32,000 “support our troops” pins and magnets, as well as actively supporting the sale of poppies in its stores ahead of Remembrance Day.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will see up to 550 wounded, injured and sick service members and Veterans from up to 25 nations showcase their resilience and determination by taking part in a range of adaptive sports, including the first winter sports program at an Invictus Games. These Invictus Games will be supported by a number of leading organizations from across Canada, as well as around 1,600 volunteers from across the world.

London Drugs shows support for Canadian military community through partnership with Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 

Twenty members of the Invictus Games community participated in one of the world’s best cycling challenge events earlier this month – the 

. Against a stunning backdrop and clear blue skies, the group of Invictus Games cyclists from across Canada and the USA demonstrated their resilience and determination by taking part in both the 55km MedioFondo and the 122km GranFondo circuits.

2023 represented the first year that the RBC GranFondo Whistler featured two new Invictus supported categories: the Veteran and Current Military category and the Invictus Alumni category. Delivered by the Invictus Games Foundation in partnership with the RBC GranFondo organizing committee, these new categories allow international valued service personnel and veterans opportunities to participate in North America’s largest GranFondo.

From Arizona and Texas to Halifax and Victoria, the Invictus Games Foundation was proud to support participants from across Canada and the USA. The Invictus Games Alumni category is for veterans or currently serving Canadian or US Armed Forces members (or other nations) who have been competitors at any of the Invictus Games.

The Veteran and Current Military category is for any person currently serving in the Canadian or US Armed Forces or any former member of the Canadian or US Armed Forces who successfully underwent basic training and was honourably discharged.

For those taking part in the GranFondo, the riders began in leafy Stanley Park, Vancouver, before making their way across the iconic Lions Gate bridge to travel along the Sea-to-Sky highway. From there, the riders dipped down to take in Pacific Ocean views before rising slowly to join the world-famous peaks of Whistler. By the time they had finished this epic challenge, the Invictus riders had completed 1900m of total elevation.

This year’s Invictus Games Alumni participants included Andrew Garsch, a retired Captain from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) who first got into cycling due to his involvement with the Invictus community. Andrew went on to represent Team Canada for both cycling and rowing at the Invictus Games 2018 in Sydney, Australia.

Describing his experience at the GranFondo Whistler, Andrew said: “The GranFondo was an incredible experience! I loved getting out, competing and pushing my limits as well as being able to link up with other Veterans, some who I knew and some that became new friends. Being part of that camaraderie again was amazing!”

In addition to participants from Canada, a number of Invictus’ US alumni made the trip across the border to take part in this year’s GranFondo. This included former US soldier, Sean Walsh. Sean represented the US team at the 2016 and 2022 Invictus Games, competing in cycling and indoor rowing. In the true spirit of the Invictus community, Sean also mentors other athletes with diabetes.

Looking back on his Gran Fondo Whistler experience, Sean remarked: “Taking part in the Gran Fondo with my fellow international wounded, injured, and sick competitors was an incredible experience. It really taught me that what happens after the Invictus Games can be as impactful as the games themselves. As an Invictus Games alumni, I was proud to share my experience with newer members of the wounded, injured and sick community and conquer the challenge together.”

With a total of over 6,800 riders participating across the entire weekend, this year’s RBC GranFondo Whistler again demonstrated the world-class sporting event experience that Vancouver and Whistler can offer for participants, spectators and volunteers.

Last weekend saw the official handover of the Invictus flag to Team Canada during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf.

The Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023 officially closed today in Germany. As they launch their legacy projects, this marks the beginning of Vancouver and Whistler's journey as hosts for the first-ever Invictus Games to feature winter sports. The closing ceremony—which included the official handover of the Invictus Games flag from the Invictus Games Foundation to Canada—celebrated the remarkable achievements of each competitor and their families.

During the closing ceremony, Councilor Wilson Williams, representing the Four Host First Nations, gifted a ceremonial paddle to Team Germany to thank them for their hospitality. Earlier in the week, paddles had been presented to both The Duke of Sussex and to Dominic Reid from the Invictus Games Foundation to honour their commitment to recovery and rehabilitation of international wounded injured and sick service personnel and veterans.

The Invictus Games are a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage and perseverance of all those who have been injured or become ill through their time in the military. They not only showcase the strength and resilience of currently serving members and veteran competitors but also provide a platform for the world to witness the unbreakable bonds of camaraderie and support that define the Invictus community.

The knowledge exchange between the two organizing committees will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the 2025 games, building on the 10 year anniversary of the Invictus Games Foundation in 2025. All partners are already hard at work preparing for this historic event.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will bring together more than 500 competitors from up to 25 nations to compete in adaptive sports, including the new winter sports: alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, skeleton, and wheelchair curling, in addition to the core sports of indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.

The Government of Canada—through Veterans Affairs Canada—has committed $15 million in funding to support the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.

The Government of Canada will provide an additional $1 million to the Soldier On program to train and equip Team Canada.

The Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick service members and Veterans.

In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 is dedicated to respecting territorial protocols and cooperating with local Indigenous communities in the planning, execution and participation of the Games.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will be held on the traditional territories of the Lil̓wat7úl (Líl̓wat), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are committed to engaging with each Nation, addressing Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and respecting Indigenous protocols in all aspects of our Games.

Les Jeux Invictus Düsseldorf 2023 ont officiellement pris fin aujourd’hui en Allemagne, marquant le début du parcours de Vancouver et de Whistler en tant qu’hôtes des tout premiers Jeux Invictus mettant en vedette des sports d’hiver. Les Fleurons glorieux est la fondation canadienne pour la communauté militaire. Elle travaille pour soutenir les militaires, les vétérans et leur famille à chaque étape de leur parcours. Qu’il s’agisse d’initiatives mondiales comme les Jeux Invictus – où Les Fleurons glorieux agit comme bailleur de fonds pour Équipe Canada – de centres de bien-être locaux ou de programmes de santé mentale, Les Fleurons glorieux a une approche soutenue par la recherche qui fournit un financement continu, des partenariats et un partage des connaissances aux principaux programmes de soutien aux militaires et aux vétérans du Canada.

Sans limites est un programme des Forces armées canadiennes qui contribue au rétablissement des militaires et vétérans des FAC malades ou blessés en offrant des possibilités et des ressources dans le cadre d’activités sportives, récréatives et créatives. Sans limites, au nom des Forces armées canadiennes, dirige et gère le programme Équipe Canada et Amis et famille canadiens aux Jeux Invictus, en travaillant en étroite collaboration avec divers intervenants de soutien tels qu’Anciens Combattants Canada et la Fondation Les Fleurons glorieux.

Canada to Host the First-Ever Winter Hybrid Invictus Games

As the curtain closes on an inspiring ten days in Düsseldorf, the Invictus Games journey to recovery will continue as we start looking forward to the next chapter in Vancouver Whistler 2025.

Today’s closing ceremony of the Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023 is not only a special moment to celebrate all the great achievements and resilience of the competitors, friends and family – it also marks the official handover to Canada.

The special handover moment will see Team Canada co-captains Alaina Mundy and Bernard Caissie receiving the official Invictus flag from the Invictus Games Foundation.

With just over 500 days to go, there are lots of reasons to be excited about the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 which will take place from 6 to 17 February, 2025.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will host the first winter adaptive sports programme at the Invictus Games. The 2025 games will offer the Invictus community the chance to compete and experience a world-class winter sports programme of alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, skeleton, and wheelchair curling.

The winter sports program will be hosted at Whistler – a world-famous winter resort with unparalleled facilities that will offer a truly memorable experience for participants and families.

In addition to the winter sports program, the 2025 games will also feature the core Invictus Games summer sports. This will include all the favourites from previous Invictus Games such as: indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.
